BIRDSHOT

The BIRDSHOT Center constitutes a consortium of distinguished researchers spanning diverse disciplines across multiple universities. In partnership with the Army Research Lab, our collaborative efforts aim to implement a groundbreaking Bayesian framework. This framework is designed to systematically and optimally explore intricate material spaces characterized by chemical and microstructural complexity. Moreover, the Center is poised to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Develop a framework for converting prior expert knowledge into actionable materials intelligence to quickly identify feasible materials spaces.
  2. Combine multiple information sources, consisting of optimally trained physics-informed ML models or ML-augmented physics simulations capable of emulating yet-to-be-explored materials spaces, to accelerate the discovery of complex materials using advanced Bayesian methods.
  3. Leverage a fully integrated and automated platform for high-throughput synthesis and processing of bulk complex metal alloys, with unique experimental facilities for their rapid characterization under high strain rates.
  4. Train a new generation of highly skilled researchers to address the US Army’s strategic needs in AI/ML-powered advanced materials innovation.

Our vision is to create a versatile and transferrable framework that is materials and application agnostic to expedite the discovery of Army-relevant materials.

Our mission is to deploy this framework as an integrated experimental-computational – AI/ML platform to accelerate the discovery of materials for high strain-rate and other Army-relevant applications.
